However, I am using Ubuntu 12.04, and Linux has a history of bad power usage on laptops. Even with disabling the Nvidia GPU and turning the screen brightness all the way down, and even putting the laptop into power-save mode, I'm still barely able to squeeze out four and a half hours of use. It took me a long time to get used to typing on it, and I still frequently make mistakes. Gaming is also not too bad with the GT540, but it's getting long in tooth for that.Ĭons: Only one USB 3.0 port, UEFI is kinda buggy, Nvidia Optimus is still a pain on Linux even two years later. It still runs VMs in VirtualBox and KVM without any problems. The Core i7 2670QM is a pretty quick CPU, and the four SODIMM slots made it cheap and easy to fit 16GB of RAM in there. I've been using it for about two years now, and I could see myself continuing to do so for another year or two. Plus, it doesn't look half bad for something that isn't a Macbook. Pros: Reliable, reasonably fast, awesome screen, good speakers, 4 SODIMM slots for RAM, discrete GPU, decent touchpad, and all for less than $1000.
